Marie Cartwright was the third and last wife of Ben Cartwright and mother to Little Joe. Ben met and fell in love with Marie when he was in New Orleans, where she lived. They married and lived at the Ponderosa, where Joe was born. Marie died in a horse riding accident when Little Joe was about five years old.
Mentioned several times during its network TV run, Marie makes her lone appearance on Bonanza in the Season 4 episode "Marie, My Love" (episode #20).
