Wanting to prove his independence and at the same time break out of the shadows of his Pa and older brothers, Little Joe sets out to win a lucrative timber contract for the Ponderosa.

Joe is tired of living in the shadow of his older brothers and demands that Ben give him greater responsibilities at the Ponderosa.

Pa hands him the job of supplying timber to a mining company project. At the start, Joe is confident he handle it by himself. It's not long, however, before he's glad he has a family to come to his rescue.
